Hemant Soren is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Born on August 10, 1975, in Nemra village in the Ramgarh district of Jharkhand, he is a prominent leader from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party. Soren is known for his dedication to the welfare of Jharkhand’s indigenous communities and has played a key role in Jharkhand politics, especially on issues concerning tribal rights and state development.
Hemant Soren is the son of Shibu Soren, a prominent tribal leader and founder of JMM. Shibu Soren is widely respected in Jharkhand for his contributions to the movement for a separate Jharkhand state. Hemant grew up in a politically active family and was exposed to the struggles of indigenous communities from a young age. He studied mechanical engineering in Bihar but did not complete his degree.
Hemant Soren‘s political career began in earnest in 2005 when he joined JMM and contested his first election. He quickly rose through the ranks, driven by his commitment to the cause of Jharkhand’s tribals and marginalised communities. Soren was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand in 2010 and became the Chief Minister for the first time in 2013. However, his first term was short-lived due to Political instability in the state.
In 2019, Soren led the JMM to a landslide victory in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly elections in alliance with the Congress Party and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). On December 29, 2019, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister for his second term, which is ongoing.
Hemant Soren is married to Kalpana Soren, and they have two children. His background and commitment to Jharkhand’s indigenous issues have made him one of the most respected leaders in the state.
Hemant Soren has become a prominent voice for indigenous rights in India. His leadership in Jharkhand has won him respect for balancing economic development with the preservation of cultural and social values important to tribal communities.
