Sunita Williams is an American astronaut, engineer, and former U.S. Navy officer. Born on September 19, 1965, in Euclid, Ohio, she is of Indian descent. Williams earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Science from the United States Naval Academy in 1987 and a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from George Washington University.
She joined the Navy and became a test pilot, which eventually led her to NASA. Williams was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1998 and has completed multiple missions to the International Space Station (ISS). She is known for her long-duration flights and holds the record for the most spacewalks by a woman, with a total of seven.
During her time on the ISS, Williams conducted various scientific experiments and contributed to the maintenance and construction of the station. She has spent over 322 days in space, making her one of the most experienced female astronauts. Williams is also an advocate for STEM education and inspires many through her achievements and outreach efforts.
